Misdemeanors
In the state of Arizona, misdemeanors carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail and $2,500 fine. If you have been charged with a misdemeanor, such as assault, minor drug offenses or DUI, seek legal counsel as soon as possible.
Felony Charges
A felony conviction can result in a number of consequences that can vary depending on the classification of the crime and whether the crime was dangerous. For first time offenders in Arizona, felony convictions can result in the following:
- Class 6 felony: Punishable by up to 3 years in prison.
Examples: Simple drug possession, petty theft. - Class 5 felony: Punishable by up to 4 years in prison.
Examples: Stalking, prostitution, aggravated assault - Class 4 felony: Punishable by up to 8 years in prison.
Example: vehicular homicide (negligent homicide). - Class 3 felony: Punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Examples: higher degrees of drug charges, aggravated robbery - Class 2 felony: Punishable by up to 21 years in prison.
Examples: Manslaughter, armed robbery (knowingly endangering a person's life) - Class 1 felony: Second-degree homicide is punishable by up to 25 years in prison with no parole and first-degree murder is punishable by up to life in prison or death.
Felony charges can sometimes be successfully reduced to misdemeanors with the assistance of a skilled attorney. Even if you don't receive a prison sentence, if you are convicted of a felony, you could lose your rights to vote and possess firearms. A felony conviction can also jeopardize future educational, career and housing opportunities.
